REVEAL: Odessa Drive
This featured powdered room has become a true favorite of MAI!
What began as a dated, builder-basic powder room was transformed into a tailored jewel box—proof that small spaces can make a significant impact through a clear design vision and purposeful material choices.
Custom powder room with rich green wall tile, pale oak vanity, brass fixtures, and antique framed artwork, designed to maximize storage and add personality in a compact space.
The clients desired a space that felt more alive and infused with personality. Their hope was for something distinct from anything they had seen before, yet unmistakably their own. It needed to be memorable for guests while meeting practical needs for everyday use.
The design approach centered on incorporating natural materials with big personalities—a signature of Margaret Andrew Interiors. One defining element was chosen for each material category: a rich green tile as the statement feature, ivory ceramic vanity top for contrast, pale oak for warmth, and brass fixtures for timeless appeal. Black accents, drawn from the existing door hardware and other hardware throughout the home, ensured the room felt connected to the rest of the interiors rather than a stylistic detour.
The goal was not simply to make the space beautiful, but to give it a spirit that reflected the homeowners. Jewel-toned tile introduced bold color in a way that felt both vibrant and refined. The clients’ love of travel inspired the inclusion of a framed antique art piece sourced at auction—a depiction of a castle in Ireland—which worked double duty as a nod to the homeowners interest while also lending a sense of history and authenticity to the otherwise new space. Few things are more enjoyable than elevating function alongside aesthetics.
The client’s faced two additional functional challenges with this space that we were tasked to address. First, the compact footprint meant storage was at a premium. As a busy family, they needed a solution for optimizing space utilization without making the space feel even more compact (this is often a myth, by the way!). Second, the room’s proximity to the kitchen called for added privacy, but introducing the mechanical noise of a traditional exhaust fan felt counterproductive.
To address these challenges, a custom vanity was the right place to start. The three, wide and deep drawers maximized practical storage space. To maintain a feeling of openness despite the physical footprint now taken up by the vanity, styling above and behind the toilet was intentionally minimal—which was reflected back beautifully in the oval mirror.
For privacy, a solid wood custom-sized door was ideal. Beyond its substantial feel, the solid core offers notable acoustic benefits, while precise sizing minimized floor clearance for improved sound control—an elegant solution for a room connected to the heart of the home.
The completed space is vibrant yet composed, grounded in natural materials and shaped entirely around the clients. Every choice was deliberate, and the result is a powder room that is both personal and enduring. Overall, this project was an absolute joy.
